If you have access to a metal shop, welding equipment, and the time to source blades, a motor, a gearbox, and a frame, you can build a working shredder for less in raw materials than a finished machine costs.

But "less in raw materials" isn't the same as "less total cost." DIY builds carry hidden costs that rarely show up in blueprint parts lists:

  • Time — sourcing steel, laser-cutting or hand-cutting blades, and assembling a frame typically takes weeks, not days, even for experienced builders.
