"Shredder" and "crusher" get used almost interchangeably in the plastic recycling world, which causes a lot of confusion when you're trying to buy the right machine. They're not the same thing, and picking the wrong one can leave you with the wrong output for your process.
What a Plastic Shredder Does
A shredder uses rotating blades to shear plastic into small, relatively uniform flake. This is the standard first step in most Precious Plastic-style workflows — shredded flake feeds directly into extrusion (for filament or profiles) or injection molding (for molded products). Blade count and mesh size determine how fine and consistent that flake is.
What a Plastic Crusher Does
A crusher reduces plastic size through a different mechanical action — typically crushing or compressing rather than shearing. Our 10mm crusher is built for a different part of the size-reduction process, useful when your material or downstream process calls for a different particle profile than blade-shredded flake.
Which One Do You Actually Need?
- Going into extrusion or injection molding? A shredder producing consistent flake at your target mesh size is almost always the right starting point.
- Processing material that doesn't shred cleanly, or need a different reduction step? A crusher can be the better fit depending on your specific plastic type and process.
- Not sure what your downstream process actually requires? This is the most common situation for people just getting started — and it's worth getting an answer before buying, since the two machines aren't interchangeable.
Can You Use Both?
Some workflows do use a crusher and a shredder at different stages, depending on the plastic type and the product being made.
